CFW Reopening News

Apr 5, 2021

Hey CFW Community,

We are writing to update you all with regards to the closure of CFW Health & Fitness due to being in the “White Zone”, and we may have some good news. We have been working hard to explore all aspects of the current Ontario Covid-19 restrictions that apply to gyms and fitness facilities.  Our aim (as always) is to see how we can best continue to deliver our health services to you all while in this new “White Zone”.

As you all know by now, it is our main mission at CFW to help our community optimize your health. We know that everyone comes to CFW to improve their health, even though each member’s individual health goals may vary. Some of you come to class to fight and prevent disease (like diabetes or heart disease)s, while others are working to rehab injury or improve daily function by addressing immobility. Many of you come to maintain or improve your much needed mental health.  Together, as a community, we are all pursuing health. Our goal is to reopen CFW to allow our community to continue working on these goals, and in accordance with the information below, we can do that!

MEMORANDUM

As per the Current Provincial Rules for Gyms and Fitness Facilities Serving the Disabilities Community, CFW Health & Fitness will be opening to serve our community to provide physical and mental fitness to those who are unable to take care of their needs elsewhere. The opening of CFW Health & Fitness will be done in accordance with all applicable laws for Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act, 2005 and the Occupational Health and Safety Act and the regulations made under them. Additionally, we will be in compliance with any advice, recommendations, and instructions of public health officials and/or the Office of the Chief Medical Officer of Health.

We understand that the gym restrictions were changed to accommodate those in the disabilities community and at this time we are working hard to prepare all procedures and policies to allow compliance to such rules and regulations. The following information comprises the specific rules concerning the operation of gyms and fitness facilities serving those in the disabilities community:

Conditions – The facility may open to persons with a disability requiring physical therapy:

  • where the person has written instruction for physical therapy from a regulated health professional qualified to provide such instruction; and
  • where the person cannot receive the physical therapy elsewhere. In this situation, the staff permissible on-site are those required to assist with the physical therapy (i.e. personal trainers, caregivers, etc.).

Disability is defined broadly, and includes but is not limited to mental and physical disabilities, temporary disabilities (such as those arising from an injury or accident), diabetes mellitus, a brain injury, lack of physical co-ordination, deafness or hearing-impediment, and mental disorder (such as ptsd or anxiety). A person who has only a mental or psychological disability or condition but requires physical therapy would qualify as a person permitted to use the facility under this rule. http://www.ohrc.on.ca/en/policy-ableism-and-discrimination-based-disability/2-what-disability?fbclid=IwAR3GlQwc1IBxSx7ad_GgTMloVTAdlRtevKgr7XGMWh_Cxe4aU8upgrwEZno

Masks – Indoor mask use in public areas is mandatory except when eating, drinking, or engaged in athletic or fitness activities or where a person experiencing disabilities is being accommodated.

Safety Plan – There must be a “Safety Plan” prepared describing measures used to reduce the transmission risk of COVID-19, and must include information about “screening, physical distancing, masks or face coverings, cleaning and disinfecting of surfaces and objects and the wearing of personal protective equipment”; it must be posted publicly.

Cleaning – All equipment must be cleaned and disinfected between uses

Washrooms/Locker Rooms/Change Rooms – these are permitted to remain open; must be cleaned and disinfected as frequently as necessary to maintain sanitation.

Contact Tracing – The contact information of every member of public entering indoors must be recorded.

( 1 )O. Reg. 82/20, Sch. 2, s. 48(3.1), Sch. 7, s. 45(4).

Time Limit – there is no time limit on the use of the gym

Personal Training – one-on-one personal training is permitted

Capacity – patrons must maintain 2m distance from one another (2) and there is a 50% capacity limit (calculated as: [total square metres of floor area / 8], rounded down to nearest whole number) (3) Using the calculation provided by the Ontario Government in On Reg 82/20, the capacity as it applies to CFW Health & Fitness is as follows:

Total sq/m = 1,149

1,149 / 8 = 143

143 / 50% = 71.5

Although our 50% capacity is permitted to be 71 patrons, to ensure ample ability to social distance and the high standard of care we have made the decision to cap the capacity to 35 (25%).

All our clients are tracked using the MindBody system which requires clients to pre-register/schedule visits to gain access to the facility, digitally tracks details pertaining to the individual, time of use, etc.

Our cleaning staff has been doubled during the COVID pandemic environment. Cleaning protocols are highly regimented and available in our COVID safety plan.

At CFW Health & Fitness it is our top priority to provide a safe and clean environment for all clients including those in the disabilities community. We are proud to provide a vital service for the health and wellbeing of the community, including those experiencing disabilities.

There is still much to do to prepare for reopening but we are aiming to be open within a week! Things may look different in order for us to be allowed to open under the “White Zone” restrictions, but we are willing to do what we must to keep you, our CFW community, moving towards your optimal health as opposed to away from it with our forced closure. We know you will have lots of questions during this uncertain time, but will be in touch with all the details in the next few days so stay tuned.  For now, enjoy the good news this weekend and we will be in touch ASAP with more info in the coming days!
